Coming up in February I will be Playing three dates (And in March! We just got booked in Chicago at the Heartland Cafe!–Thanks to Mary Lemanski!) with our band, collecting cans for the Central Illinois Food Bank, announcing a local roller derby bout, presenting awards and performing for the Basement Radio Network and Playing at Bourbon Street as part of ongoing efforts at community outreach and local music support.
The Access 4 Producers group will be planning another Fundraiser at Maldaner’s Upstairs. I will be finally getting my prints of Mary Todd Lincoln in Tinsley Dry Goods.
I have also been tapped to play the part of Vincent Van Gogh in an upcoming one-man play, “Letters from Vincent,” at the Pharmacy which I will begin work on in February to possibly open in April or May.
The 3T Third Thursday Art Show will probably occur at hickox House again in February where we will have Dog of panic and the Chris Maxey trio performing among others.
Lots to look forward to in February. In addition to the things here mentioned, I will also be turning 44 on February 24th.

I was very active in getting Occupy Springfield IL going and in organizing for the first two events at the Capitol. I maintained the website built by AJ Troxell until handing it over to Christopher Woo in November. The website for OSI is here:
http://www.occupyspringfieldil.org
I was interviewed by Jim Leach on WMAY, Hugh Moore and Friends on the Fly Over Zone on WQNA, and on WAND TV during my involvement and plan to continue participating in rallies and events in the future.

Hello again, friends!

Lisa window shopping.
My girlfriend and cohabitant of 15 years, Lisa Hensley, just had a birthday last weekend. She finally got a cake! Two of them, actually. I bought her an ice cream cake and her friend, Julie Hull, made her a cake. I forget what kind but it was really good. I volunteered to provide a PA and run sound for the belly dancers at the Ethnic Festival out at the fairgrounds on September 3rd and 4th and Lisa came out with me. We usually attend the event every year and last year I really thought I could help improve the sound and Kari Dotson took me up on my offer. Lisa had an awesome time and this weekend we are going to see a Latin band in Chicago that she likes. Her promotion at work has had her busy and I know she really needed the time to be special and relax.

Kari Dotson and Troupe Zahava at the 2011 ethnic Festival - the troupe tried something different this year in one act, a Bollywood theme.
Things have slowed down a bit for the Access 4 Producers Group. Paperwork still needs to be finished and the editing station set up at Crowdson and Company, but things are still moving. We are looking forward to another fundraiser down the road.
The Third Thursday Art Show (http://www.thirdthursdayartshow.com) will be held at two simultaneous locations coming up this September 15th for the first time. Norb Andy’s is back in business with their old hours and interest peaked there to have the shows back at that location upstairs in the Hickox House. Don White is running the bar and talked everyone concerned into having the show there as well as at Andiamo! this time. Everyone expects this to be a success and that we will start doing it at both locations every month now that the show has grown.
We spent some time cleaning the historic house earlier this week and will be working on it again tonight (Thursday, September 8th, 2011). Joe Kozak helped out by doing some reconstruction after treasure hunters removed some wood paneling and the entryway, requiring some work to be done to make it presentable during the show. We oiled and polished the wood work and cleaned and moved furniture and lamps etc. into the upstairs rooms.
Don not only has Tom Irwin doing his open mic in Norb’s during the show, but he also enlisted Micah Walk to host an open mic upstairs in the Hickox House as well! All the same amount of DJs and music will be happening at Andiamo! as well. Deep Lunar Blue is the band at 10pm in Charley’s Club.

Matthew Schultz performes as Lab report/The Division in Chicago on the street as people pay for their parking, July 2011 (you can see my hand on the BabyTG spring in the lower left, ha!) - photograph by Robert Hyman
Back in July I had the amazing experience of performing with Matthew Schultz and the Division in Chicago (http://www.thedivision.org). We were part of the Milwaukee Avenue Art Fair at Logan Square. We performed with his Anti-Tank Guitars which he constructed himself and performed a ritual with Krishna and the Crow just like at the June 3T.
It was amazing and I also saw Chris Turner perform from Lens Records. The restaurant across the street came over to complain during his set plus a guy walked up off the street and started singing “Ebony and Ivory,” during his set, CRAZY!
Hot Bag O’ Donuts (http://www.hotbagodonuts.com) played a great show at Third Thursday in Charley’s Club after having won the monthly contest to play. We have also been playing at Bourbon Street now through Roger Smith who is now booking there. It used to be the old Bruce’s Tavern where Tom Irwin did his Hootenanny Lovetrain Express and the Underground when Skippy used to do sound there. Now the current owner (funny enough his name is also Bruce) wants to have a more racially integrated crowd there and we have been playing shows to help out with that. We also have been donating our door money to worthy causes, first the A4PG and this month on September 24th we will be donating our door money to the Illinois Stewardship Alliance (http://www.ilstewards.org).

Revelry at Bourbon Street: Casey, Erin, and Damion from HBoD
At one point Wendell Crook painted during the show and donated the sale of the painting to the cause, which was awesome. Catalyst played with us, one of our sister bands that some of the members of Hot Bag O’ Donuts also play in. They will be playing on the 24th again with us.
Richard Naylor who lives across the street from Casey and Erin’s where we practice came over to help us by taking a photo of members of both bands which Tom Irwin did a band spotlight about to promote the show. Things went well. Oh and Tom did a front cover article about the Third Thursday Art Shows as well, thanks, Tom!

Changes are happening and I have made some personal decisions regarding which direction to follow in my life and work.
First of all I wanted to deal with the problem I have been having with getting updates made to my various blogs. The one I called an ‘e-zine’ I have decided to put on the shelf for the moment so that I could focus more on this one. Numerous problems relating to how the theme renders on smart phones and the time it takes to publish articles on it have helped me decide to shelve it for now. It is still available at http://www.thespectra.net
I also have never gotten around to setting up my e-commerce site so I decided to shelve that as well for now (even though I spent $50 to buy a manual for it). There simply aren’t enough hours in the day to take care of all those things and I really hate to say it, but FaceBook is not only faster, but everyone is there. Why spend a lot of time building things that no one will visit?
In other news, I was elected President of the Access 4 Producers Group at our annual elections in May. I suppose this could be considered a milestone in my life that I have now been elected president of a 501 c3. I expect great things from the organization this year!
Our band, Hot Bag O’ Donuts, recently played a gig at the Crack Fox bar in St. louis with The Legendary Clampetts last Saturday May 14th. I posted a video from the performance on our website that was posted to our FaceBook Fan Page by Mark Stephan of The Legendary Clampetts. The gig was a blast and we plan to return there very soon.
There was art on their walls but much room was there for more art. The owner, Carrie, said she would be interested in more stuff and so gave me her business cards to pass out to artists that I know who would fit the style she likes. I gave one to several Third Thursday artists such as Mary Tumulty, Ryan Sponsler, Felicia Olin, and Melanie Edmonson.
Speaking of Third Thursday, The shows have started to branch out to other locations and dates starting with the Moonpanda Creative Studios space they we rented for a few select 3T artists to show work during the Old State Capitol Art Fair. There is another ‘satellite’ show planned for the Springfield Art Association Gallery coming soon as well (watch the website for more information). Also I should mention that select 3T artists have been chosen for the last three months to stay on the walls of Cafe Andiamo! after each show.
I recently had an exhibition of paintings and prints at the Vachel Lindsay State Historic Site which included a new painting of Lindsay entitled, “Soul of a Butterfly, Death of the Hunter,” and Tamara Browning of the State Journal-Register wrote a nice article about it which you can read here.
I also was honored to be invited to share the stage with Joe Frew, The Greenview, and Pete Sander in the monthly Homegrown Folk Show at Bar None this last Friday, May 27th. More on that later.
So that’s a round-up of what I have been up to. Expect more frequent posts here as developments continue.
